Description

Curating Our Artistic Landscape

Theatre titan Stan Lai has created works that embody spirituality and wisdom, winning him acclaim as the most important theatrical figure in the Chinese-speaking world. In this dialogue, Lai—a tireless leader and mentor to many—expounds on his art of creativity in the past half-century: from founding Performance Workshop in Taipei(1984) to building the Wuzhen Theatre Festival as a creative hub (2013), establishing Theatre Above in Shanghai (2015) and transforming his father’s ancestral home into the vibrant Huichang Theatre Village (2024). These extremely successful, ongoing endeavors are the blocks that constitute Lai’s artistic ecosystem.

What inspires Lai the consummate artist and educator? How does he put his visions into practice while running multiple organisations and festivals? Where is the equilibrium among implementing artistic practice, division of labour and fostering inclusive communities?

For the second part of this session, we invite two respondents to join Lai for a lively exploration: Playwright and director Tze Chien Chong (National University of Singapore, The Necessary Stage, The Finger Players, Singapore International Festival of Arts) and opera director Lindy Hume (Sydney Festival, Perth Festival, Ten Days on the Island, and Crimson Rosella Creative Adventures, an initiative focusing on Australia's regional landscapes), both of whom are distinguished artists in their own rights who continually create new possibilities in their own practice. Together they open HKPAX 2026 with a candid exchange on our contemporary cultural landscape.
