Synopsis

Asian Premiere

A gripping confrontation about power, dignity, and the human right to exist

On what seems like a peaceful summer day, two worlds collide.

A busy businessman discovers an unhoused man making himself at home on his property – quiet, unyielding, and determined to convince him that the land he occupies actually belongs to him. What begins as a trivial dispute over ownership quickly turns into a grotesque duel of words, emotions, and opposing truths, where the stakes prove to be far greater than a mere piece of land. Questions arise around the meaning of possession, the price of success, and the limits of empathy. Who is the true owner, after all? The one who holds the deed, or the one who knows how to be fully "here and now"?

Where Is the Buried Dog? is a tragicomic story about fractures that run not only through society, but also through the human psyche. Rich in dark humour, absurdity, and unexpected twists, the play's minimalist form focuses all the attention on the actors' confrontation: two characters, a single space, and a steadily mounting tension that oscillates between laughter and bitter reflection. Beneath the layer of the comically grotesque lies a story about family, love, addiction, and the universal need to be seen – regardless of social status.

Where Is the Buried Dog? is a performance that entertains, unsettles, and forces the audience to pause in the rush of everyday life. Leaving the theatre, the viewer is left with a lingering question: what truly matters more – to have, or to be?

About the Artist

Wary Mary Theatre

The Wary Mary Theatre is an independent Polish theatre ensemble active since 2024, founded by actors Wojciech Kałużyński and Remigiusz Fabich. The company focuses on intimate dramatic productions for adult audiences, created in a touring-theatre format and presented in cultural centres and non-institutional spaces.

Prior to establishing Wary Mary, Kałużyński and Fabich jointly created the performance The Condom Sellers, based on a play by Hanoch Levin, in which they explored themes of loneliness, unfulfillment, and mechanisms of power in interpersonal relationships.

Where Is the Buried Dog?, written by playwright and journalist Magdalena Marszałkowska and directed by Fabian Kocięcki, is a more advanced yet highly flexible production by the Wary Mary Theatre, designed to be performed anywhere in the world. The performance has received the Grand Prix at the Blackout Festival in Wołomin, First Prize in "After Work" Adult Theatre at the Brodnica Theatre Fest, and the Mayor of Wołomin Award. In 2024, the production was also selected for the finale of the 50th Tychy Theatre Meetings, where both actors received acting awards. In 2025, Wojciech Kałużyński received a Special Acting Award for his portrayal of the Homeless Man at the Brodnica Theatre Fest.
